Climate emissions leaped by 7.5 percent in a single year in the fashion industry, which now contributes nearly 2 percent of global climate pollution. The jump in greenhouse gases in 2023 β the most recent year for which full data is available β follows a slight decline of 1.17 percent in 2022, after several flat years.
Damage to European forests from increased logging, wildfires, drought and pests is reducing their ability to absorb carbon dioxide, putting European Union emissions targets at risk. The targets include the expectation that forests will suck up hundreds of millions of tonnes of CO2 emissions and store it in trees and soil, to compensate for pollution from industry.
Marine fish may be among the most overlooked contributors to the oceanβs carbon cycle. A new study led by researchers at the University of Miami offers the first direct evidence that fish living at mesopelagic depthsβ200 to 1,000 meters below the ocean surfaceβexcrete biogenic carbonate, a key component of the marine inorganic carbon cycle.
