How we can help

Climate transition plans play a critical role in helping companies navigate the shift to a low-carbon economy. A robust plan outlines how an organization will achieve its emissions targets, engage customers and stakeholders, adapt to the changing global economy, and evolve its business model to align with a 1.5°C world.

We support organizations with full climate transition plan development—ensuring your plan reflects best-practice structure and rigor—as well as targeted services that optimize each component of your plan. To keep your transition strategy and targets aligned with the latest criteria, we stay ahead of shifting regulations and frameworks, including leading guidance from the Transition Plan Taskforce, the Ceres Blueprint, SBTi’s Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0, and CDP.

Our years of experience supporting companies across sustainability strategy, data, and reporting enable us to address every aspect of your transition plan. With deep experience across a wide range of climate- and sustainability-related fields, our team of cross-functional experts are uniquely equipped to help you navigate the complex, interconnected nature of climate transition planning.

Services provided include:

Climate transition plan development

ADEC ESG will work closely with your team to develop a best-in-class climate transition plan that communicates your organization’s strategy and ambitions. We’ll do the foundational work of consolidating any existing documents and data, closing any information gaps, benchmarking against customer and regulatory requirements, and engaging with stakeholders on low-carbon economy transition.

Gap analysis and roadmapping

ADEC ESG will conduct a comprehensive gap analysis your current climate transition strategy against industry-leading transition plans, established CTP frameworks, and regulatory frameworks. We’ll assess the completeness and credibility of your current transition strategy, identifying strengths, gaps, and priority areas for action and engagement.

Using the results of your gap analysis, our team develops a roadmap recommending next steps. Your roadmap will outline how to address the identified gaps, how to take action on emerging trends, and key steps to take before developing a robust, fully aligned climate transition plan. As global trends, regulations, and environmental impacts shift over time, so will your transition strategy. With strategic roadmapping, we’ll work to ensure that your transition plan evolves over time, setting out actions that adapt to emerging risks and changing conditions.

Climate scenario analysis

ADEC ESG will perform a climate risk and opportunity assessment, evaluating how shifting environmental, regulatory, and market conditions may impact your organization. Our team will identify physical and transition risks, highlight growth opportunities in resilience and lowcarbon innovation, and deliver actionable recommendations to strengthen strategy, reduce exposure, and unlock longterm value.

A subsequent climate scenario analysis will look at different future conditions and the potential impacts from physical climate change and low-carbon transitions. We’ll identify impacts on your operations and supply chain, highlight risks and opportunities, and describe future anticipated changes in the short-, medium-, and long-term. The identified risks and opportunities are then evaluated against your risk scale, with recommendations on risks or opportunities that should be integrated into your risk, strategy, finance, and governance functions.

Benchmarking

We’ll evaluate your existing climate transition plan against peers and industry leaders, comparing an array of sustainability program components including disclosure and reporting, targets, actions and initiatives, and policies. This analysis provides a clear view of your current maturity and establishes the groundwork for identifying strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement.

Don’t already have a transition plan in place? We’ll analyze how your peer group is performing and highlight opportunities to strengthen and formalize your approach.

Target setting

We’ll work with you to develop and set clear, science‑aligned emissions reduction targets as a core element of your climate transition plan. We’ll assess your current emissions profile, evaluate feasible reduction pathways, and align targets with the latest climate science. This service defines targets that are ambitious, achievable, and fully integrated into your broader transition strategy, driving credible progress toward your goals.

Implementation

Trust our team to put your plan into action. We’ll translate strategy and planning to real change, building the systems, processes, and relationships that will ensure your commitments come to life. From setting initiatives in motion to connecting you with our network of trusted partners, we’ll put every component of your plan into place to deliver on your climate goals.

Learn more about climate transition plans

What is a climate transition plan?

A climate transition plan is a time-bound action plan that:

  • Outlines how your organization will transform its business strategy to align with a low-carbon world
  • Connects your climate goals to core business priorities
  • Showcases how climate action will lead to positive business and financial outcomes for your organization
  • Aligns actions with targets and tracks progress over time

Climate transition plans are required or recommended by a number of major disclosure frameworks such as IFRS S2, CSRD, SBTi, and CDP.

There are also numerous benefits to developing a transition plan—across owned operations, investor relations, and the wider value chain. These include:

  • Supporting strategy development and implementation, risk mitigation, and long-term value creation.
  • Fostering organizational culture by setting up mechanisms for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and KPI alignment.
  • Giving stakeholders visibility into your progress on public climate commitments.
  • Meeting expectations of customers and consumers looking to reduce their own emissions.
  • Providing decision-useful information to investors and lenders.
  • Meeting investors and financial institutions increasing expectations for portfolio companies to have and disclose transition plans.

Explore more benefits in our Complete Guide to Getting Started.

Yes. A reduction target is a goal, the end point to your journey. A transition plan lays out the steps you’ll take to get there. It is a “living” document that helps you plan out how your organization will achieve that goal, including what the risks may be, and how you’ll address them.

It also communicates to your stakeholders that you are proactively managing risks and positioning your organization for long-term resilience.

While there is no single standardized format for transition plans, organizations often pull from established transition plan frameworks to create a format that best suits their strategic roadmap. Examples include:

  • The Transition Plan Taskforce (TPT) guidance breaks transition plan components into five broad categories: foundations (objectives, priorities, how these objectives will be achieved, high-level implications, etc.); implementation strategy (actions being taken to achieve goals and the financial implications of those actions); engagement strategy (engagement with the value chain, peers, government, communities, etc.); metrics and targets (metrics being used to drive and monitor progress); and governance (how the transition plan is being embedded into governance structures).
  • The Ceres Blueprint for Implementing a Leading Climate Transition Action Plan is guided by three principles: ambition, action, and accountability. These are further broken down into five core building blocks: foundations (goals and targets); implementation strategy (actions to decarbonize and support a just transition); engagement strategy (public policy advocacy); governance (integrating the transition into core business strategy and implementing accountability mechanisms); and metrics (tracking and reporting progress).

A decarbonization plan provides the technical pathway for an organization to reduce emissions. Decarbonization plans are typically technology- and operations- focused. These plans lay out what emissions will be reduced, the reduction target, and the timeframe over which the reduction will occur.

A climate transition plan showcases the company-wide strategy to deliver those emission reductions. Transition plans lay out the strategic, organizational, financial, and governance framework that ensures delivery of your decarbonization plan and alignment with your company’s long-term goals.

A net-zero strategy is a long-term climate ambition to specifically reduce greenhouse gas emissions to residual amounts. A decarbonization plan or a climate transition plan may help you achieve your net-zero strategy, but net-zero is not necessarily a feasible goal for all organizations.

Like so much else in sustainability, this varies from organization to organization. Some important foundational signals of readiness include strategic alignment, a scope 1-3 emission inventory, leadership commitment, and the capacity to assess risks and opportunities. Without these, it may be difficult to start putting together a meaningful climate transition plan.

A climate scenario analysis helps you understand how different future climate and policy pathways could impact your organization. This includes information on risks and opportunities, how your business performs under different variable futures, and the feasibility of potential initiatives under different policy and climate conditions. This data supports and guides your transition plan strategy, informing your decision-making around how to stay resilient and competitive in a rapidly changing sustainability landscape.

A climate scenario analysis is also required by IFRS S2.
