The Challenge
Baystate Health previously contracted with another consulting firm to quantify emissions from their four largest campuses in order to ensure compliance with the State of Massachusetts Global Warming Solutions Act. As a voluntary exercise, Baystate decided to implement a system to manage entity-wide GHG emissions in order to establish sustainability as a priority to satisfy stakeholder expectations.
Our Solution
Baystate Health engaged FirstCarbon Solutions, now known as ADEC Innovations, to prepare a comprehensive baseline GHG inventory for calendar year 2009 encompassing all of Baystate Health’s locations based on sound principles and leading protocols. ADEC prepared the inventory based on guidance provided in The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (WRI/WBCSD, 2004).
The baseline inventory provided a foundation for Baystate Health to manage its GHGs in a systematic and structured way. Management of GHG emissions will allow Baystate Health to mitigate compliance risk, find opportunities for cost reductions in its operations based on the data trended, and communicate its efforts to stakeholders in a reliable and transparent way.
This will provide Baystate Health with competitive advantages in terms of cost savings and future positioning by being a greener health services provider.
